notes:
- reflector setup at nac
- stuff: gaffers tape, masking tape, sharpies, composition notebook, wireties,
  power strips.
- mark up floorplan with ip addresses and locations of gear

=== GUIDELINES:

- Be Prepared to work hard.

- Be conscious of the overall layout of the network.

- Be luser-friendly and willing to answer questions about the network setup.
  NO LART'ing.

- Become familiar with the security procedures. Very important for any
  volunteer.

- Label all equipment and cables

=== PROCEDURES:

= Equipment Donation:

Any equipment to be loaned to the networking of the event should be
checked in, signed in, labelled, and signed out when it has to be taken back.
There is alot of physical space cover, and for your own equipments protection,
we need a procedure to minimize theft. Information to keep:

- Donator's Name
- equipment model number
- equipment serial number
- location of deployment
- time signed in
- time signed out
- signature for signin
- signature for signout

= Cabling:

The network will simply not function unless we adhere to a cabling
standard. There is a graphic of the two standards EIA-568-A and EIA-568-B
listed at http://www.anixter.com/techlib/standard/cabling/d0502p09.htm

* There are two standards listed. Since we cannot mix and match, one of them
has to be picked. I choose 568-B since its what I know by heart (and its what
our company has standardized on). Please become familiar with EIA-568-B.

Since this document might be printed, I'll copy the relevant standard to this
text:

Pin #	Conductor Color Code
1	white/orange
2	orange
3	white/green
4	blue
5	white/blue
6	green
7	white/brown
8	brown

* Also, very important is which is pin 1 and which is pin 8:

- Holding an rj45 head, clip side facing you, head to the left, tail to the
right:
       1 ______
        |__ |_____
        |__=== |_____
        |______|
       8

- Holding an rj45 head, head on top tail on bottom, clip side away from you:
         __----___
        /12345678/
        ||||||||||
        | |
        | |
        |--------|
        |--------|
        |________|
          | |
          | |

* Lastly. When running multiple strands of cable, its easy to lose track of
which is which, making it impossible to troubleshoot when theres a problem.
Before cutting the cable from the spool, label each end (inelegant but works:
masking tape and a sharpie permanent marker).

= Passwords to equipment

All passwords to routers, switches, servers, snmp communities, etc,
will be stored in the logbook. We should change them on the day of the
conference. Also, snmp read-write communities should be disabled.

= Incident Handling:

H2K2 is a hacker conference, thus it is expected that some hackers
might attend. Considering it would but a damper on the mood of 3000 people if
they paid 50 bucks to have the conference shut down on them, it is in
everyone's best interest if we cooperate to deal with any illegal activity.

We *will* be sniffing the network, for our own sake. I will be the primary
contact if there are any incidents that need to be addressed. In the event of
an incident the NOC will be closed as either Truman or Myself will be gathering
the logs. In the event that law enforcement gets involved, we'll require the
presence of Emmanuel and a security personel. In such an event noone is to talk
to anyone outside of the network team directly about the incident. Any
discussion with law enforcement should be done through Myself and/or Emmanuel.

An escalation procedure will be posted to the website for any outside
organizations that require a contact to notify us of any suspicious behavior.

=== PLAN:

= Thursday: 7/11

* 11AM: Show up at the Hotel Pennsylvania. Bring any gear to the NOC area and
  sign it in.

* 12PM: Divide up into formal teams. The teams will be:
- Adam and Truman:	Core network services
- Alex: Internet uplink.
- Ken and Phil: Wireless and Streaming
- Mark, Mike, Doug:	Public Terminal Cluster (PTC)
- Frank: Cabling

Volunteers will be assigned to each team. The bulk of which will be under Frank
for cabling and MMD for the PTC. Basically, if you bring your own crimper, you
can work with Frank.

* 12:30PM: Start setting up functional areas (noc, ptc). Mostly table
preparation. Once the tables are set up, we should have a good idea of what
  gets cabled where.

* 2pm: start building the place out
- Truman and I will set up the router to the internet, the dns/dhcp server,
and newby's sparcs (one for the ptc and one for the web/ftp server).

- Frank: As we define areas, we'll need to place hubs/switches/access points.
Whenever we deply one of these, we need to sign them out from the noc book
and make sure its labeled. The main areas of concern are:
 - cable drop(s) for the PTC
 - cabling up each access point (as per Ken). Dont forget we need one hub
and access point for skytop, penntop north, and penntop south.
 - cabling for each of the encoding stations.
 - find out from delchi what he needs beyond cabling for his encoding station.
 - Use your discretion on wether or not gear should be tucked into the raised
   floor or left exposed.

- Ken and phil will first set up the wireless gear (the streaming gear has to
wait until the AV team has their stuff squared away). Please make sure you have
the contact numbers for the guys at NAC to get the reflectors set up.

- MMD will be in their own world with the PTC gear.

If all goes well, we should be done by dinner time. If not, we'll take a pool
and order in some food.

* Sleep well thursday night. I dont see much sleep happening friday or saturday
nights.

* At this point we'll write down a schedule for convention coverage for the
remainder of the weekend. We might have to pull 8 hour shifts unless we can
get more volunteers.

= Friday - Sunday:

* Shift coverage. nothing exciting.

= Sunday: teardown

* The same people who were around to set up the place should be the same people
who take down the place. If you were working with Frank or MMD to cable or
set up the PTC, then you should help them remove the cabling (neatly as
possible so it can be re-used) or helping MMD pack up their gear.
